Lest We Forget

Remembrance Day occurs in Canada each November 11. It is a day of national commemoration for the more than 100,000 Canadians who have died in military service.

In Flanders Fields
John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

  1. Beautiful. As I'm sure you know we remember today in the UK and also on Sunday- which is a little confusing but I personally think stopping work and life on the eleventh day is the more fitting tribute.

I remember all the soldiers from far away lands who fought in the first and second world wars. Living in the UK there is an acute reminder that a small strip of sea and huge sacrifices at home and perhaps more importantly from our friends overseas are all that prevented losing our freedom, possibly forever. I am extremely grateful to Canadian, Australasian, Indian and all the other troops who fought with the European allies for their great sacrifices.

  4. Dear Krista,
I would like to find out about using the above poppy image with the soldiers and crosses in it for a book I'm writing about John McCrae. Will you please email me? Thanks. Susan bonfire@xplornet.com
