Sisley - Soir de Lune

A bodice ripper chypre

In honour of Valentines Day, I bring you Sisley Soir de Lune, a good old-fashioned bodice ripper.

Dark and magnetic, like the eyes of My Wicked Earl over there, Soir de Lune really pops my pearl buttons.

Starting with smoldering spices, Soir de Lune unfolds its red rose petals dripping with honey and a touch of soft peach. Deep in the woods, it lays me down on a soft bed of earthy patchouli and moss. In the darkness is a hint of the bitterness to come in the morning when my love leaves.

House: Sisley
Nose: Dominique Ropion
Notes: lemon, bergamot, orange, mandarine, coriander, nutmeg, pimento, May rose absolute, mimosa absolute, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, peach, moss, musk, patchouli, honey, sandalwood
Where to buy: in Toronto at Holt Renfrew

Thank you to Victoria at Bois de Jasmin for giving me her extra sample!!!

  1. My dear, though you live at a distance, one of your pearl buttons just hit me in the eye... and I'm too entranced by your sumptuous description of Soir de Lune to feel any pain! Bravo!

  5. What a fun post and a perfect description for Soir de Lune! It is not a shy wallflower.
I am glad that you've enjoyed it!

  7. So Soir de Lune is a Ropion? Had no idea.

I will admit that every rose chypre I've ever tried, so far, has taken a back seat to L'Arte di Gucci. All the same, I think I must keep trying them.

For curiosity's sake, what other rose chypres have you liked?

  8. Hi Muse: I haven't tried many rose chypres yet, which is maybe why I fell so had for Soir de Lune. Before this I concentrated mostly on green/leather chypres. I haven't tried L'Arte du Gucci yet, but I've heard great things about it. I have, and love, Tauer Rose Chypree. I've tested YSL Rive Gauche, but don't love it. I have samples of and hope to review soon: Estee Lauder Knowing, Rochas Byzance, Weil de Weiland Weil Secret de Venus. I hope to get samples of Niki de Saint Phalle and Balmain de Balmain as well. I'm going to check out your site for more ideas and reviews!

  9. It's written so nicely. Why, why did I have to read it today, when I'm so weak?.. (I haven't got/bought a single new sample in ... (counting fingers) almost a month. Now I absolutely have to try it. And to make it worse, I like the bottle.

  10. Ah! See, I don't care much for the green chypres... green florals make me weak in the knees, but green chypres - including Darling Niki - sort of threaten me. I cringe. Floral chypres are an entirely different thing.

The Tauer, I think, is almost more amber than anything else, despite the name. (I should get out my samples and wear at least once more before it gets warm. Whoo, that's some radiant stuff. Lovely, though.)

Knowing is gorgeous on me for, oh, two hours, and then the Dreaded Lauder Base rears its ugly head and I have to scrub. (I don't know what's in there. I can't even *smell* it, particularly, but it's guaranteed that after two hours wearing a Lauder, any Lauder, I'm going to start feeling nauseous. Shame, really. Knowing is beautiful on my aunt.)

A few others I love: Teo Cabanel Oha, Maison Francis Kurkdjian Lumiere Noire pour femme, Parfums d'Empire Eau Suave, Ungaro Diva, and... what's the other one? Can't remember at the moment. Email me and I'll set you up with a bit of L'Arte edp; it's hard to find these days.

Meant to say, "My Wicked Earl" cracked me up. Oh! and if you get on with resiny Orientals, the new Malle, Portrait of a Lady, might knock your socks off. Likewise the discounted but way-better-than-its-price original La Perla. I thought they were both gorgeous until I started choking on the resins. (Vintage Magie Noire, too, but that's tough to come by as well.)

  11. Sounds gorgeous! Beautiful writing, but no surprise from you. I love that Soir de Lune "pops your pearl buttons"!

I see you mentioned Knowing in your above comment. That is really one of my favorites now. I'm so glad I changed my mind about Lauder. Would love to know what you think of it!

  12. Muse and JoanElaine: I haven't tried the Lauder yet, but I will write about it when I do!

Muse: Thanks for the suggestions. I am intrigued imediately by the Cabanel and MFK because I already like their perfumes. I'll email you about the L'Arte, thanks!

  13. Muse, I noticed bottles of L'Arte for sale recently online. I wonder if a secret stockpile has been located somewhere. I treasure my big bottle and am scared of using it. Really love the Soir. It's much more peppery and spiced than L'Arte I think.
